Huawei’s Battery Energy Storage Systems Run Out Of Juice In The Uk
Exclusive Huawei’s product portfolio in Britain is about to shrink again with suppliers informed that its battery energy storage systems (BESS) are to be discontinued locally by the end of 2025.
Sources who asked to remain anonymous told The Register that existing inventory will be cleared out and all existing warranties honored, though distributors are no longer permitted to sell extended warranties.
Suppliers were informed on August 22 and some told us they are already promoting alternative brands. Huawei sells a range of kit in solar energy storage systems under the LUNA brand, including modules, bundles, and inverters.
Huawei refused to comment when asked to officially confirm its plans.
We understand BESS was not a major part of the corporation’s UK revenues, equating to a single-digit percentage, and the decision to pull the product line was purely commercial.
This means Huawei now relies on wearable tech, PCs, tablets, and audio products in the UK.
As The Register revealed this week, the company’s revenues have plunged in Britain from a peak of £1.28 billion ($1.7 billion) in calendar 2018 to £188 million ($159.6 million) in 2024.
This followed an executive order in the US that prohibited companies from buying Huawei’s networking gear. The UK faced significant pressure from its ally and ordered companies to stop buying Huawei tech for 5G infrastructure from the end of 2021 and to entirely remove any existing kit from 2027.
This disruption caused delays and degraded performance from 5G networks, relegating Britain to being among the worst in Europe in terms of download and upload speed, latency, and packet loss.
The US executive order cut off Huawei from buying Amercian tech. Google was forced to stop the Chinese biz from integrating Android, and this, along with anti-China rhetoric, meant fewer consumers in the West bought Huawei smartphones.
The phones are no longer sold in the UK. Huawei has since developed HarmonyOS, it dominates on home soil, and is concentrating on other regions of the world. Globally, the company’s consumer and enterprise tech portfolio generated around $118 billion in sales during 2024. ®
